Great idea #5 - Using synonyms and definitions

What is it?

To use examples with synonyms or definitions to clarify ideas or meanings of words.

How do you create/do it?

Step by step process:
1. Pick a broad range of examples
2. Choose both accurate and inaccurate examples
3. If using a synonym, students must know one of the synonyms. If using definitions, make it clear and age appropriate.
4. Model with the examples, and restate the definition for each.


nWhat are the benefits?

It would be very helpful for lower elementary grades because it gives the students a visual aid/reference. It also builds on prior knowledge they have.

What are some examples/reminders?

This is how you could use the definition of a word:



"A vehicle is an object that takes you from place to place. What is a vehicle? (point to picture of a car) This is a car. It is an object that takes you from place to place. It is a vehicle."



"This is a chair. A chair is an object, but it doesn't take you from place to place. It is NOT a vehicle."
